The Jefferson nickel debuted in 1938, replacing the Buffalo nickel in the 25th year of its production run. A design contest to commemorate Founding Father and third President of the United States. 1938 With the Buffalo nickel series winding down and a contest already opened for artists to submit designs for the proposed Jefferson nickel, Buffaloes were made in small quantities in 1938. In fact, only the Denver mint struck Buffalo nickels in 1938, with a total mintage of 7,020,000.
